Deadline Extensions
A short video explaining deadlines & emergencies
When is a deadline extension appropriate?
The deadline extension request is appropriate when planning your holidays as well as when unexpected circumstances arise that necessitate a brief absence from the program.
A total amount of extra days given to extend the deadline cannot exceed beyond the days bucket granted and displayed in a deadlines section on your platform account. It is crucial to remember that the allocated bucket of days is to be used for the entire program.
Turing College recommends taking longer breaks, such as holiday weeks, every three months for optimal use. It's essential to manage your time efficiently to avoid finding yourself in a situation where you'll use your remaining days to book a correction. Otherwise, you could run dangerously close to your deadlines and use more days from the bucket than expected. In such a case, you should plan your time more vigilantly and not be so close to your deadlines, thus making the most of each day and keeping the consistency of learning. If you are in an emergency situation, a slightly different approach may be followed.
- If you’re a UZT learner, keep in mind that extensions do not extend your overall UZT study period.
Examples of situations for which an emergency absence is appropriate:
Hospitalisation or intensive medical care;
Death or critical illness in the family;
Life-threatening issues;
Other
The following examples are considered as non-emergencies:
Academic stress or overwhelming workload;
Sickness (e.g. cold, flu, sore throat); Headaches or migraines;
Injuries that do not require hospitalization;
Wedding or family events;
Work commitments
Other studies
Holidays
Other
Learners who are experiencing one of the non-emergency situations above are encouraged to assess whether this will not directly affect the achievement of the stated learning requirements.
How to seek for a deadline extension?
When the learner faces a situation requiring more time in a sprint than initially stated, the learner must inform the Turing College staff by requesting an extension via the Platform, as shown in the picture below.
After receiving this request Turing College staff will determine an appropriate length of extra time given. The length of time will be determined by considering the circumstances of the situation and the ability for the learner to either complete the project or return successfully to the program following an extended absence. Having a long break for one or two weeks may have serious learning progress implications. It is therefore essential to communicate your situation to Turing College staff to help you find ways to get back to your original pace.
Can I get a deadline extension during the first sprint of the program at Turing College?
Despite the fact that the deadline extension request is appropriate when planning your holidays as well as when unexpected circumstances arise that necessitate a brief absence from the program, there are some exceptions and considerations, which all Turing College learners should keep in mind before asking for a deadline extension in the first sprint.
The deadline extension could be given during the first sprint if:
Emergencies: it's essential to recognize that a deadline extension should be sought only under specific circumstances. These include emergency situations (mentioned above), where we advise learners to promptly reach out to Turing College staff through the support chat for assistance.
Holidays: if you have started your learning in Turing College and have planned vacations or extended leave of absence (e.g., yearly holidays) that fall within the first sprint, you may request a deadline extension if those were communicated to the admissions team during the admissions process. However, it's recommended to try and complete the first sprint without an extension if possible, as based on our experience and analysis, it appears to be more challenging to meet batch and initial deadlines afterwards.
Note: It is mandatory for all learners to promptly inform the admissions team about planned holidays in advance. Your cooperation in this matter directly impacts the smooth progression of your learning journey. If, for any reason, you have not communicated your planned holidays to the admissions team in advance, a strict rule applies, and no deadline extension will be granted for the first sprint, except in cases of emergency. Taking this step not only ensures your own progress but also demonstrates your commitment to the program's success. Your timely communication is greatly appreciated and plays a significant role in upholding the efficiency and integrity of our learning environment.
However, regardless of whether a deadline extension is granted, we expect all learners to approach the program systematically and responsibly. If you take holidays during the first sprint, it is your responsibility to catch up on missed work, actively participate in weekly stand-ups, and meet the subsequent deadlines after your return.
If I am not approved for a deadline extension, what should I do?
There are a number of alternative options for managing a hardship that does not qualify for deadline extension. Any learner experiencing a hardship is encouraged to communicate directly with Turing College staff when possible via support chat to discuss relevant resources and possible resolutions.
What can I do if, when taking a deadline extension for recovery, I cannot catch up after returning from my absence?
Learners who cannot catch up, Turing College staff will review each situation individually.
If longer absence was needed at the end of the program and the learner is in good standing in the program at the time of their absence, the learner may consider requesting some additional time or come with another batch when the situation of the learner improves. Learner should discuss these options with Turing College staff.
